Armstrong High School is a high school located in Richmond, Virginia. Education in the present building began in 1909, upon which the school was renamed from the Normal School to Armstrong High School. It was the first school in Richmond for African American students (see racial segregation). The school's namesake is Samuel C. Armstrong, a white commander of a colored regiment during the American Civil War. Armstrong founded the Hampton Institute, a historically black college now known as Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.
