History

Aube was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Champagne.

Geography

The department is part of the current region of Champagne-Ardenne. It is surrounded by the departments of Marne, Haute-Marne, Côte-d'Or, Yonne, and Seine-et-Marne.

The geography, with its chalky soil and undulating plain, is well adapted to wine-growing, particulary the champagne that takes its name from the region.

Culture

Clairvaux Abbey is located 15 km from Bar-sur-Aube. A cheese is named after the village of Chaource.
