Franchise history
The Celtics are the franchise that has won most championships in the history of the NBA. Anchored by Bill Russell, they won eight consecutive championships from 1959 to 1966. In the 1980s, anchored by Larry Bird, they enjoyed an intense rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers. They are the only team besides the New York Knicks to be members of the original National Basketball Association and still be in their original city.
The team was named for a professional team that existed in the 1920s that dominated pro basketball. The New York team is referred to as the "Original Celtics."
