Castile and Leon (Spanish Castilla y León, Astur-Leonese, Castiella y Llión, and in Galician language Castela e León) is an autonomous community of Spain, the country's largest. It is formed by the union of two ancient kingdoms: Kingdom of Castile and Kingdom of León, several times separated and reunited in the Middle Ages.
Castile and Leon is bordered to the north by Asturias and Cantabria, on the east by the Basque Country and La Rioja, to the southeast by the autonomous community of Madrid and Castile-La Mancha, to the south by Extremadura, and to the west by Portugal and Galicia.
Castile and Leon is composed of the provinces of Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, and Zamora.
The capital of Castile and Leon is in Valladolid, and its other best-known cities are Burgos, Salamanca, León, and Segovia.
Spanish is the main language, but in León, Zamora and Salamanca , Astur-Leonese language or Llïonés is also spoken along with Galician. In Treviño (Burgos (province)), an enclave of the Basque Country, also Basque is spoken.
The Astur-Leonese language is spoken in Leon (provinces of Leon, Zamora and territories under Portuguese administration of Miranda de Douro and Sendim), and also in the Asturian Principality. Its geographical limits are the Galician-Portuguese in the West, and the Castilian (Spanish) languages in the South and East.
