Chia is a plant of the mint family whose seeds have high amounts of the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6.
Chia seeds have been historically consumed in Mexico and South America, but they are not widely known in Europe. Only recently in 2003, the UK Food Standards Agency received an application for approval of chia seeds as a novel food ingredient.
