From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.
Czechs are a western Slavic people of Central Europe, living in the Czech Republic. Small populations of Czechs live in Slovakia, Hungary, Russia and other neighboring countries, as well as in North America and Western Europe. They speak the Czech language, which is closely related to the Slovak language.
The Czechs are descendants of ancient Slavic tribes who inhabited the region of Bohemia from the 6th century onwards.
Their neighbours, the Moravians, are nowadays (i.e. usually from the 20th century onwards) sometimes considered a branch of the Czechs, mainly because they speak the (Moravian dialects of the) Czech language. Moravia constitutes the eastern part of the the modern-day Czech Republic.
