Daniel Johnson, Jr. (born December 24, 1944) was Premier of the Province of Quebec, Canada from January 11 to September 26, 1994, and leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec, which is the main federalist political party in Quebec, i.e., it supports Quebec remaining within Canada.
His father, Daniel Johnson Sr., had been premier of Quebec from 1966 to 1968, and leader of the Union nationale, a conservative political party. Daniel Sr's position on Quebec independence was ambiguous.
Pierre-Marc Johnson, son of Daniel Sr and brother of Daniel Jr, was premier of Quebec for a brief period in 1985, and leader of the Parti Quebecois (PQ), the main separatist political party in Quebec.
Daniel Jr became Premier following the resignation of Robert Bourassa. He then lost the 1994 election to Jacques Parizeau and the PQ.
He headed the "No" campaign in the 1995 Quebec referendum in opposition to the PQ's proposals for Quebec sovereignty, and served as Liberal party leader and leader of the Opposition until 1998.
