Danylo King of Rus (also known as Danylo of Galicia) (1201-1264) knyaz of Halych-Volynia, from 1253 king of Rus. After the death of his father in 1205, Danylo was forced to seek refuge in neighboring Poland and Hungary. In 1213, with help from the Ruthenian nobility, he regained his domain. By 1234, he managed to unite under his rule all of Volhynia, defeated the Teutonic Knights in 1227, took control over Galicia in 1238 and Kyiv in 1239. In 1241 his lands were pillaged by Tatar invasions and he was forced to accept their rule. By 1245 Danylo was able to consolidate his land, fend off attacks from Poland, Hungary and disgruntled boyars. Afterwards he began efforts to mount a coalition against the Tatars, signing peace treaties with Poland and Hungary and seeking assistance from the Teutonic Knights, however did not recive sufficent help and was forced to abandon his efforts after a Tatar raid in 1260.
During his reign Danylo erected new cities, including L'viv and Kholm (today Chełm), reformed the military and established close cultural ties with Europe. For his diplomatic efforts to fight the Tatars in 1253 Danylo was crowned as king of Rus by pope Innocent IV.
