Dick Murphy

Dick Murphy is the 33rd Mayor of San Diego, California, USA.

Murphy has served his first term as mayor since December 2000. He previously served one term on the San Diego City Council.

Murphy is running for re-election against San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts. During Murphy's term, the city faced serious financial problems, including an underfunded pension program and a series of credit-score downgrades. Murphy's term also saw the opening of PETCO Park.

Murphy served as an officer in the U.S. Army, as the San Diego Marketing Director for Bank of America, and as an attorney at the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps. In 1985, he was appointed municipal court judge by Governor George Deukmejian. In 1989, the governor elevated him to superior court judge.

Murphy graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Economics. He received his Master of Business Administration from Harvard University and his law degree from Stanford University.

Murphy and his wife, Jan, have lived in San Diego for more than 30 years. They have three children: Brian, Shannon, and Kelly.
