Dijon

Dijon is a commune in eastern France, the préfecture (administrative capital) of the Côte-d'Or département and of the Burgundy région, of which it is the historical capital. Population (1999): 149,867 for the commune; 240,000 for the greater Dijon area.

The city is well known for its mustard, even though nowadays mustard seeds are largely imported. Throughout the European Union, only mustard originating in this area can be sold under the label 'Dijon Mustard'; however this description is also given to some mustard produced in non-European markets, such as the United States.
