Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449 - January 11, 1494) was a Florentine painter from the Renaissance and a contemporary of Botticelli and Filippino Lippi, head of the large and prosperous workshop. He studied with Baldovinetti and later taught Michelangelo. One of the most successful painters of his time in Florence. His actual name was Domenico di Tommaso Bigordi. Perhaps his most notable work is Old man and his grandson (1480, Louvre, Paris) but he executed fresco paintings in Florence and other Italian cities - Pisa, Rome and San Gimignano. He painted frescoes and altarpieses in direct, sober, and detailed manner. Magnificent frescoes in Santa Trinita and Santa Maria Novella (both in Florence) are famous for contemporary portraits and settings. Another famous painting by Ghirlandaio is the portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni; 1488 (Madrid, Palacio Villahermosa).
