Dongola

Dongola (also spelled Dunqulah or Dunqula and formerly sometimes known as El Ordeh) is a city in northern Sudan, on the banks of the Nile. From the fourth to the fourteenth century it was the capital of the Makurian state.
It was also the name of a province of Upper Nubia on both sides of the Nile. It belonged to Egypt and was the seat of a pasha.
A city in the U.S. is named after it: Dongola, Illinois.
