Esoteric Buddhism can refer to two related concepts:
- In China, Esoteric Buddhism (密宗, Zh. mizong) is an alternate term for the Vajrayana or Tantric schools of Buddhism in general.
- In Japan, Esoteric Buddhism (密教, Jp. mikkyō) usually refers to the Shingon school of Vajrayana Buddhism and (less often) its predecessor the Tendai (Tientai) school.
