From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.

Gettysburg National Cemetery is a cemetery located near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was dedicated by Abraham Lincoln after the Battle of Gettysburg for the Union troops who lay slain at the battlefield during this major Civil War battle, which resulted in a Union victory.

Initially, many of the Confederate soldiers who died in the battle were buried in Gettysburg National Cemetery. However, most of their remains were removed for reburial in the U.S. Southern states following the war.
