Goosebumps

The very popular Goosebumps series of children's horror fiction books was created by author R. L. Stine. Sixty-two books were published under the Goosebumps umbrella title from 1992 to 1997. The series also spawned a gamebook spinoff, also written by R. L. Stine called Give Yourself Goosebumps. The Goosebumps series was 15th on the American Library Association's list of most frequently challenged books from 1990 to 1999 [1]. Several of the titles in the series were made into movies; the series also inspired a television series which ran from 1995 to 1998. Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask inspired two videos. Some consider it the Harry Potter of the early 1990s.
In terms of plot, the books are hardly scary, as they were written for a younger audience. Adults may even find some of the sillier situations to be rather humerous. It is obvious that Stine keeps his plots well within typical horror stereotypes, so much so that the books can be categorized according to plot (monsters, ghosts, etc.). Even so, Stine did come up with a few interesting variations, namely, Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes. Settings are always generic, suburbs, summer camps and such. Some of the books spawned sequels, Monster Blood had no less than four appearences. These sequels seemed merely to repeat the story from the original, and never enlarged very far on the plot. Furthermore, the narrative is nearly always first-person. Finally, the endings to the books are always undesirable; there has never been a Goosebumps book with a happy ending.[1]
After the original series ended in 1999, Stine began writing Goosebumps: Series 2000 books, although the spinoff of the original series did not last long, due to declining popularity. There are 25 Series 2000 books, including one sequel to an original series (Night of the Living Dummy).
[1]This is not always true; The Horror at Camp Jellyjam has a pleasant ending, as does One Day at Horrorland.

Running gags/trademarks
The protagonist is always twelve years old, except in the case of sequels starring the same character. The protagonist is usually picked on by older siblings, or jealous of younger ones.
