The Hyundai Motor Company (HMC, 현대자동차, 現代自動車), a South Korean company, is principally engaged in the manufacturing and selling of automobiles. It is Korea's largest car maker and world 7th largest inclulding Kia, as of 2003. It is part of Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai Motor Co. operates the world's largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, located on Korea's southeast coast.

History

Hyundai Pony

Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Motor Company in 1947 as Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Hyundai Motor Co. (HMC) was established in 1967. The company's first model Cotina was manufactured in cooperation with Ford in 1968. In 1975, Pony, Korea's first proprietary model was released. Pony was exported abroad for the first time of Korean auto industrial history in 1976. In 1986, an export strategic model Exel(PonyExel in America) was nominated 'best product 10' by Fortune Magazine. Then the company produced mid-size passenger car Sonata, first model manufactured with it's own technology in 1988. Since that time, Hyundai has expanded and upgraded its product line in the world.

Hyundai Coupe

In 1998, Hyundai acquired Kia Motors. In 2000, the company established a strategic alliance with DaimlerChrysler and severed its partnership with Hyundai Group. In 2001, Daimler-Hyundai Truck Corporation was formed. In August, 2004, DaimlerChrysler sold its 10.5% stake in Hyundai for $900 million US dollars.

Global Organization

Hyundai has been advancing its global market management and overseas operations by investing in Hyundai manufacturing plants in North America, India, China, Turkey and R&D centers in North America, Japan and Europe.
