From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.

John Ogdon (January 27, 1937 - August 1, 1989) was a pianist and composer born in Manchester, England. He gained international fame by winning the International Piano Competition in memory of Liszt Ferenc in Budapest in 1961, and first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1962.

In the 1970s he was hospitalized for several years, suffering from schizophrenia. He returned to performing in public in 1980, and in 1988 released a well-received four-disc opus, shortly before he died of pneumonia.

The BBC made a film about his life titled Virtuoso. Ogdon was played by Alfred Molina, who won a Best Actor award from the Royal Television Society for his performance.
