John Oliver

John Oliver (1856-1927) was a British Columbia politician and farmer.

Oliver was involved in local politics when he won a seat in the provincial legislature in 1900 and became leader of the opposition. He lost his seat in 1909 but returned to the legislature in 1916 as a Liberal MLA and became Minister of Agriculture and Railways in the cabinet of Harlan Carey Brewster. Oliver succeeded Brewster as Premier when Brester died in 1918. Oliver's government developed the produce industy in the Okanagan Valley and tried to persuade the federal government to lower the freight rate for rail transport. Oliver remained premier until his death in 1927.

The town of Oliver, British Columbia, is named after him.

John Oliver is also the current Bishop of Hereford, and is a member of the House of Lords as a Lord Spiritual. See John Oliver (bishop).
