Mohammed V (August 10, 1909 - February 26, 1961) was Sultan of Morocco from 1927 to 1961. He was the son of Sultan Yusef, upon whose death he succeeded to the throne. In 1953 he was dethroned by the French colonial administration. He returned to power two years later after unrest followed his unpopular successor. Mohammed was then responsible for negotiating Moroccan independence. In 1957 he took the title 'King'.
