Monstrous Regiment is a book by Terry Pratchett published in late 2003, part of his Discworld series. It takes its name from a misogynist 16th century tract by John Knox, the full title of which is "The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women" (the women in question being Mary, Queen of Scots and Mary Tudor).
The plot involves a young woman disguising herself as a boy and joining the Borogravian army in order to find her brother, and discovering that the army contains quite a large number of disguised women. It is based on a number of real occurrences of such things, and also on such folk songs as Sweet Polly Oliver (the name of the main character is Polly, and she takes the name Oliver).
