Rabbit (disambiguation)

From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.

Rabbit has a variety of meanings:

  • In all varieties of English, a rabbit is an animal.
  • In British slang a "rabbit" is an inexperienced and/or incompetent person; the phrase can be qualified by the area of incompetence, e.g. a "tennis rabbit". In the sport of cricket, the last few batsmen (the tailenders), if especially incompetent at batting, are known as "rabbits". A "rabbit" often seems unsure of how he should even 'hold' his bat, as typified by Phil Tufnell, Allan Donald and Glenn McGrath. The term is also used for a higher order batsman who is out frequently to the same bowler; Mike Atherton is sometimes described by commentators as "Glenn McGrath's bunny".
  • In Cockney rhyming slang the word rabbit means to talk incessantly ("rabbit and pork"="talk"). This also inspired the song "Rabbit" by Chas 'n Dave, which features rapid-fire handovers between the two vocalists.
  • Rabbit is the nickname of Eminem's character in the film 8 Mile. Rabbit Angstrom is the name of the central character in a series of novels by John Updike.
  • For some years the car manufacturer Volkswagen sold a model called the Rabbit in North America. Elsewhere in the world it was called the Golf.
  • Welsh rabbit is a snack dish of toasted cheese. The spelling "Welsh rarebit" is a euphemism.
  • Rabbitt was a popular South African rock bank in the 70s
