Silverchair

From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.

Silverchair (originally called Innocent Criminals) is an Australian grunge band. Its members are Daniel Johns, Chris Joannu, and Ben Gilles. They were formed in Newcastle, New South Wales, the sixth-largest city in Australia, 160 km north of Sydney.

The group was originally a four piece group, including Tobin Finnane. The group met at Ben's garage to play covers of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and others. However, Tobin moved overseas, and the band became a trio.

After winning a demo-contest with the song "Tomorrow," the band became big during the grunge hype in the early 1990s. Their first LP, Frogstomp, was made a very short time after Silverchair won the contest. After Frogstomp, skeptics called this album light-grunge, Silverchair released Freak Show. This album contains very dark songs, pretty heavy/grungy, but it never became as big as Frogstomp.

The album Neon Ballroom diverged from Freakshow by adding a greater amount of experimentation and piano/string arrangements. Leaving the darkness and negativity of the previous albums behind, Diorama was written and produced entirely by Daniel, while yielding the most positive and unique sound to ever come forth from Silverchair in the form of string and orchestral pop songs barely recognizable from their old days of grunge.
