Somatic cell

From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.

A somatic cell is a body cell, as opposed to a sex cell or gamete in the germline. Somatic cells have 46 chromosomes, making them a diploid cell. Gametes, in contrast, have only 23 chromosomes, making them haploid cells.

Somatic cells can be used in cloning.
