Southhold

Southold township is located on the eastern portion of Long Island, New York. The town borders stretch from Riverhead, New York to Orient Point (approximately 23 miles) and measuring approximately 29,447 acres (119 km²). Officially, Robins Island, Plum Island, and Fischer Island are part of Southold township.

Since its founding in the 1600s, Southold village’s population has grown significantly especially in the later years. In 1650, the population was estimated to be 180 quickly growing to 880 by 1698. Currently the population is approximately 1,500 as it becomes more popular among the summer crowd.

The history of the village of Southold is little more than a history of its church which still exists today.

Several other cities and towns are also part of the Southold township, they include: Greenport, New York, Cutchogue, New York, and Mattituck, New York:

  • Greenport is known to be the business center, developing from its early roots as a shipping and harbor activities which included fishing, trade, and whaling. Greenport’s harbor enjoyed its success because its harbor never froze-over. Currently it has approximately a population of 3,000.
  • Mattituck is another town part of Southold township. Mattituck was first settled in 1680, and much like Southold town, the church was the center of town.
  • Cutchogue is another part of Southold township and is primarily a farming village. Southold was settled about 1661.
