Square One

From open-encyclopedia.com - the free encyclopedia.

Square One (full title: Square One Television) is the name of a children's television show, originated and broadcast in the United States from January 1987 to April 1994, intended to teach mathematics and abstract mathematical concepts. Five seasons of the show were produced. The show was a compilation of 5-10 minute segments, each introducing and applying concepts in mathematics such as counting or combinatorics, fractions, estimation, and probability. The clips featured regular characters and were often parodies of culture or popular television shows such as Pac-Man, music videos, or The Late Show with David Letterman.

The show would conclude with a 10 minute episode of Mathnet, a parody of Dragnet. Mathnet, though intended to teach mathematical concepts like the rest of Square One, was distinguished by its intelligent scripts and big-name guest stars. Although a Mathnet TV series never resulted, a 90-minute movie made up of episode segments aired in prime time on PBS.

Square One was also shown on the US cable television station Noggin, but was removed from it's lineup along with other Children's Television Workshop shows in May 2003.
