W. G. (Winifried Georg Maximilian) Sebald (18 May, 1944, Wertach im Allgau–14 December, 2001, Norfolk, United Kingdom) was a German writer.
Life and work
Sebald was regarded toward the end of his life by many literary critics as one of the world's greatest living writers. He held an academic position at the University of East Anglia for many years. His works, which are largely concerned with the theme of memory, both personal and collective, were in particular attempts to reconcile the trauma the Second World War had on the German people. His distinctive and innovative novels were written in German, but are well known in English translations which he supervised closely. They include Austerlitz, the The Rings of Saturn and Vertigo.
Sebald died in a car crash. He was driving together with his daughter, who survived the crash.
